Feeling Puzzled

Finding What Feelings Mean for Children

A feelings vocabulary for kids ages 5–12

Front cover of Feeling Puzzled: a boy sits under a full moon and starry night sky, hugging his knees with a question mark beside him. Text reads Feeling Puzzled, Finding What Feelings Mean for Children, by David DeBroux.

When children can name a feeling, they can share it.

This is not a story. It is a feelings vocabulary, made to be read together.

Feeling Puzzled gives children ages 5–12 simple, clear definitions for their feelings, so they can name what they are going through and tell a trusted adult about it.

It is built to be read with a parent, counselor, or caseworker, not alone. Each definition uses words a child can actually understand and use.

David wrote the book because he could not find the words when his own kids needed them. Feeling Puzzled is the resource he wished he had.

What readers are saying

David's breakdown of the Feelings Wheel offers a beautifully clear way to teach the complexity of human emotions. I plan to use this book with older children who are eager to expand their emotional vocabulary and self-awareness.

Tracey Schindler Pollack, MS LPC

"Feeling Puzzled" is a clear, easy to understand book for use with children. It is a handy tool for anyone interested in helping children to identify what feelings are going on inside of them. The author takes great care to use accurate words that reflect each feeling. Well done!

Andrew P. Bures, MSSW

DeBroux has laid out the layered feelings that we all feel so we can more closely examine and contend with infused emotions. He has constructed his book in a leveled breakdown and manual-like way to help us process and pinpoint our inner workings. Labeling an emotion gives us contending power and resilient strength for life's happenings.
